What is and An An Eye Blink Switch?
Eye Blink Switch is an another unique
assistive device that will help people with severe physical disabilities to
control the devices by blinking their eyes, like it acts like switch or button
but there is use of eye movement instead of hands. An eye blink switch is special
kind of assistive device that allows people to control communication devices,
even electronics by blinking their eyes, control computers. This device makes
easier for people who face difficult times in using regular keyboard, mouse or
touchscreen because of physical disability.
Who uses this device?
Eye Blink Switches are designed especially for people who have physical disabilities like limited muscle control or severe mobility challenges. Some of the people who benefit most from this device include:
1. People with paralysis or those who have
limited muscle control
2. People with spinal cord injuries: Especially those affecting upper limbs or causing full-body immobility.
3. Cerebral palsy: People who often have trouble with precise motor control
4. People with muscular dystrophy: People who have weak muscles
5. People with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), who have brain injuries, or neurological disorders that make body movement very difficult.
How will this device work?
- A sensor is carefully placed near the learner's eye (e.g. either on
a headband, glasses, or forehead).
- Interesting thing about this is, the sensor can detect intentional blinks not just regular or involuntary blinking.
- When the user blinks intentionally, the sensor in the Eye Blink Switch captures the signal and sends it to a controller and it functions.
- Each blink can:
- Select letters or words on a screen
- Operate a speech device
- Control a wheelchair
- Turn lights on and off.
- Use a computer or phone
Why important?
- This device gives independence to people who cannot literally move
their body, legs or arms.
- It supports the function of permitting the learners to communicate,
share and control the environment around them.
- This device assist in improving communication which is a vital need for anything like, sharing ideas, communication through eye blink switch and imparting conversations.
- It allows interaction with others, may not be possible verbally but through the assistive tool to reduce isolation.
- Device provides a simple and interactive way to keep attached with
technology.
Components of the Eye Blink Switch
-
Sensor – Detects the intentional blink and sends a signal.
-
Controller – It interprets the signal and connects to a device.
-
Software – It displays options and lets the learner choose via blinking.
Examples of Eye Blink Switch Devices include:
-
NeuroNode Trilogy
-
EyeLink Switches
I personally felt this device is so amazing that this device presents how the advanced technology and new innovation can actually break the barriers and encourage learners with disabilities to sustain in educational filed and grow more.
Where this device can be used?
This can be used in hospitals for communication with caregivers, in a classrooms to help student answer questions or while taking tests. Additionally, in a classroom during activity or games to click "YES" and "NO", by blinking to select the option which allows the learner to participate equally as others. Furthermore, this same tool is very important during exam to select answers and submit it.
How does Eye Blink Switch help in learning?
1. Communication in the classroom: learners can
answer the questions by blinking yes and no.
2. Access to Digital Learning: it helps the
learner to explore how to control computer, tab and other gadgets using eye
blink.
3. Increase participation: Students can take part
in group work, games, or any classroom discussions that is taking part along
with others that will aid in boosting confidence and independence in learning
activities.
4. Taking test and quizzes: Student can easily
participate in games quizzes, and other tests.
There are parts in the devices like sensor which
detects blinks, and there is controller that connect the sensor to the device
that can be computer or AAC device, and software which allows user to scan the
choices and select their choices using blinks. Example of Eye Blink Switch
Devices are NeuroNode Trilogy, Eye link switches.
